Zane Grey Championship Playoffs Return to Cabo San Lucas in 2025
The first champion of SFC's Angling Club Era will be crowned in the same place as the last champion of SFC's open era.
(Dallas, TX, July 3, 2025) – Sport Fishing Championship (SFC) will be returning to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for the 2025 Zane Grey Championship Playoffs, as announced today by broadcast hosts Robbie Floyd and Peter Miller during live coverage of the Pensacola Billfish Release Tournament, Presented by Legendary Marine. The Zane Grey Championship Playoffs will take place Oct. 18-20. SFC's championship trophy and playoffs are named after Zane Grey, the fishing icon who held numerous world records -- including catching the first marlin to weigh more than 1,000 pounds. In 1998, Grey was welcomed into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame’s inaugural class.
The top two angling clubs from both the Atlantic and Gulf Divisions’ point standings at the conclusion of the regular season earn playoff berths. The Atlantic Division champions will be crowned Aug. 22 at the MidAtlantic and the Gulf Division champion punches their ticket to Cabo at the Mobile Big Game Fishing Club Labor Day Invitational on Aug. 31.
“We’re extremely excited to host the Zane Grey Championship Playoffs in Cabo for the second year in a row,” said SFC Commissioner and CEO Mark Neifeld. “After a grueling season for our angling clubs in both the Atlantic and the Gulf, the Pacific levels the playing field.”
One of the most well-known venues for sportfishing globally, Cabo San Lucas is an incredibly diverse fishery for billfish, commonly known as the marlin capital of the world. The October months are prime for Blue and Black Marlin, with Pacific sailfish and striped marlin available year round.
